Welcome to Queens River Adventure Camp and the Queen Rose Hiking Trails

The Queens River Adventure Camp

Queens River Adventure Camp is a beautiful slice of paradise within the SAFCOL Nelshoogte Forestry Plantation between Barberton and Badplaas. The Camp is a LEAP Centre (Learnership, experience and adventure program) / Veld School allowing many children to experience the great outdoors in a safe and comfortable environment. It can also be hired for church camps, school camps and in fact any group/s that want to break away for a stress-free, quiet time away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Queens River Adventure Camp boasts a fully equipped industrial kitchen and a Dining Hall out of which we can cater for your group or you can do your own catering hiring the kitchen. At night, the Boma can be utilised for a relaxing sit around a nice fire and stargazing on clear nights. The camp also has an Obstacle Course which children can use for team building.

The camp is also the base camp for the Queen Rose Hiking Trails.

The Queen Rose Hiking Trails

The Queen Rose Hiking Trails are set in the breath-taking Makhonjwa Mountains between Barberton and Badplaas. The trails are considered to be one of South Africa’s most spectacular. They wind through mountain passes, indigenous forests and over the Queens and Montrose Rivers and Montrose Plantation. Along the route you will be treated to a wide variety of indigenous plants and animal species, including the 350 types of birds that are found here.

The beauty of the Queen Rose hikes is that anyone can do it, as long as you have a reasonable level of fitness and a pair of sturdy hiking boots. Some of the climbs may leave you a little short of breath but the views from the top will certainly take your breath away!

There is the accommodation. For those seeking the authentic hiker’s experience, the two hiking huts at base camp provide the perfect ‘basic’ accommodation. But for anyone looking for something special, the Matumi Bush Camp Cabin is the place to stay, nestled amongst the indigenous bush of the Nelshoogte Reserve. For weary hikers it is the perfect remedy for tired feet and the great news for those reluctant to walk is that it can be hired out by non-hikers too.

The Queen Rose hiking trails have it all, the spectacular views, incredible wildlife, entertaining river crossings and perfectly placed natural splash pools. What’s more, anyone can enjoy it from babies in backpacks to spirited senior citizens. Yet the real beauty of the trails is that it enables you to slip away from the stresses of modern-day life and reconnect with nature.

We went and met a Caucasian couple who told us "people like us do not belong in places like that" when we asked what they meant the husband started addressing my younger brother (13) like an adult (very hostile and aggressive).I, of course, told them that he was not to talk to him like that (he is a child). When the management intervened, he told us not to come back because he was protecting what was his and also claimed to have seen the whole ordeal and that is why he was asking us never to come back but said he did not see when the husband was hostile towards my younger brother. It is not even about coming back. It is the fact that you are defending a fully grown man addressing a thirteen year old like they are age mates.the boy was not even aware that that paper fell. He was also surprised, and that man aggressively accused him of lying.that is my problem, and you are claiming to have not seen him do that, and that speaks volumes. What did we have to gain from lying?Do you mean the context you also fabricated to defend your mates? My brother in Christ, there are a lot of fair ways you could have handled the situation, but nonetheless.GO TO HELL!!! Not only to burn but to rot as well.

A group of us did a 3 day hike from the Safcol Houthuis, to Queens River Base Camp, then to Matumi Bush Camp & finally back to Safcol Houthuis.Day one spends a lot of time in pine forests, but the second and third day were fantastic. Accommodation at each spot is great for a hutted hike and exceeded expectations. Our main issue was a lack of info before the hike. The info on the website (regarding huts, trail distances and maps) is outdated and it's confusing when booking and planning for the trip.

Queens River Adventure Camp is a very well kept camp with great hiking routes. The routes are well marked and breathtaking. You hike through various biomes with varied types of vegetation and can take a splash at a waterfall in the cool mountain stream close to the fountain of its origin. The management team on site was very friendly and helpfull, and went out of their way to accommodate us.We will be back again.

Running water at camp sites, luxurious bathrooms, and ample safety and security measures in place. The hike itself was challenging and not the typical walk in the park, which made it even more enjoyable.Rivers and waterfalls on route, which were thoroughly enjoyed.

Amazing experience. The trails are clearly marked. Each group receives a 2 way radio, so if anything goes wrong, you can contact the staff, so you do feel safe.Great cabins, very clean and all the needed cutlery and items are there, perfect to lighen your load, so that you don't have to hike with extra items. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Best service I have received at any hiking trail yet.Would highly recommend, the trail itself is the perfect combination of grassy mountainsides and woodland trail, with waterfalls where you can go and have a swim.
